Photography & Media
PhotographyMost major brands of colour film are easily available in China but slide or high/low ASA film may be difficult to find. One hour film processing is available in the larger cities, and the print quality is acceptable. Digital is easier but make sure you have big memory cards as there’s lots to photograph! All security X-ray machines at the airports are film-safe. All photographic equipment should be declared upon entry into China. Please don’t take photographs at aerodromes, military installations or other politically sensitive areas or take photographs from aircraft. Ask permission first when taking photos of adults and children. As in many places around the world taking photographs is forbidden in most museums, palaces, grottoes, and temples so respect the signs that are displayed. However some institutions allow photography if a small fee is first paid. Media TV - Numerous national and international channels (like BBC World News, CNN, etc are offered by the larger hotels in China. The State owned China Central Television (CCTV) has 10 channels and some English programs are broadcast every day on CCTV Channel 2, 4, 9 and 10. The news in English is broadcast every evening at 23:00 by CCTV Channel 4. RADIO – China has many radio stations and China Radio International broadcasts to the world round-the-clock in 39 foreign languages and four Chinese dialects. The Easy FM station (on 91.5MHz) has a daily 12 hours of English broadcasting and Western music. Good also for information on what is happening in Beijing and a five minutes news program is broadcast every hour on the hour. NEWSPAPERS - The major English newspaper is China Daily reporting both international and home affairs. Available free of charge in many of the larger hotels everywhere in China. The Shanghai Star and Beijing This Month, are also available in English, covering a wide range of topics and are good sources of information for sightseeing, shopping, entertainment, and eating out. Most large hotels have newspapers and magazines, such as International Herald Tribune, The Times, Asian Wall Street Journal and Far Eastern Economic Review. |
