Your Money

Cash:
Chinese currency is, Renminbi (people’s money) or RMB. The unit of Renminbi is a yuan and has smaller denominations called jiao and fen. The conversion among the three is:
1 yuan = 10 jiao =100 fen 

RMB is issued both in notes and coins.

The denominations of paper notes include 100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 yuan; 5, 2 and 1 jiao; and 5, 2 and 1 fen.

The denominations of coins are 1 yuan; 5, 2 and 1 jiao; And 5, 2 and 1 fen.

Keep smaller denomination yuan notes for taxis and other small payments. Prices are always marked in Yuan.

Traveller’s Checks and Foreign Currency:
As one of the most secure ways of carrying your money, they can be changed at international airports, main branches of the Bank of China and major hotels. Hotels are only allowed to  exchange money for their guests. Exchange rate is generally better than cash and the exchange rate is set by the government

Australian, Canadian, US, UK, Japanese and most western European currencies are exchangeable. Retain your currency exchange receipts so you can change unused RMB back to your home currency before you leave China. You may exchange RMB in Hong Kong without receipts.

ATMs:
Cash-points (ATMs) are available that accept international cards such as Visa or American Express and you can select ‘English’. ATMs at branches of the Bank of China and the Commercial and Industrial Bank take international cards and some branches of other banks do too. Look for machines with international card logos. Hotels can be paid using most of the international credit / debit cards but they are generally not accepted for train and plane ticket purchases.
Internet online banking is useful to check your account easily from any internet cafe or hotel business centre.

Money Transfer service providers are available and cash advances on credit cards may be done at main Bank of China branches (weekdays, 9am-4pm), 4% commission.

Lost Credit Cards:
Contact all credit card companies immediately if you lose or have your wallet stolen. Contact the Public Security Bureau (police station) to obtain a police report number or record of the loss. Most credit card companies have an emergency toll-free number to call if your card is lost or stolen.
