China is packed with marvellous arts and crafts and choosing just what to take back is going to be difficult. Beijing ‘s specialities are Ivory carvings, Jade objects, Cloisonné and Carved Lacquer Wares. Other popular items include kites, paper cuttings and figurines made from clay.
 
Ideal for the ardent shopper, Beijing has several areas to head to:
 
Wangfujing Street is at least 700 years old and starts with East Changan Jie in the South and finished at China Art Gallery in the North. Here there is a big variety of shops including the Foreign Language Bookshop. It is possible to buy brushes and ink stick, jade, teas, shoes, silk cloth and even roast duck.. The famous Beijing Craftwork and Art Mansion is located here as is the Yong Tailors Shop which is known for its excellent service in sewing and tailoring men’s formal dress.
 
Another very old business centre is Qianmen Street which has a 500 year history and has many old stores. While visiting Tiananmen Square you will find Xidan Commercial Street nearby offering clothes, food markets and other commodities A modern environment for shopping and recreation of International standard.
Shopping in Beijing If antiques are your thing then Liulichang Culture Street should be on your must list. You can walk in minutes from the Hepingmen subway station to find jewellery, ancient calligraphies and other antiques as well as paintings. 

Remember that any antique more than 100 years old is marked with the red seal and you need an export license to
take it home.One of the best known shops is Rong Bao Zhai which has been trading for 300 years and sells authentic pieces of art. 

If you have a taste for books you can buy new versions of ancient Chinese books and old edition books on many subjects at 57 Liulichang West Street. Books and videos can also be purchased from Xinhua Book Store, 218 Wangfujing Da Jie in the Dongcheng district and Beijing Book Building at 17 Xi Chang’an Street in the Xicheng District.Chinese Silk

For silk, Xiushui Street known as Silk Alley near the US Embassy is a good place for bargains such as shoes, bags, sweaters and other handicrafts. Some haggling over the prices will get you a good bargain.
