The Olympic city of Qingdao (Sailing Events)
![]() In the Southeast of Shandong province lies Qingdao, a beautiful seaside city which was at one time a colony of Germany and Japan until it was returned to China at the end of the second world war. Korea and Japan lie just across the yellow sea and make this city important for international trade.
Due to its 33 years in the hands of German and Japanese influence the city features much architecture of European influence and is an attractive and colourful city.
Being surrounded by the sea on three sides it is a popular tourist destination . As you would expect from a city with such a location delicious seafood is a speciality here. To accompany your meal you can try the famous Qingdao Beer.
As a popular tourist area Qingdao sponsors several festivals including the International Beer Festival, the Qingdao International Sea Festival, the Sea Affection Festival, the Summer of Qingdao Festival and finally the Beach Culture Festival.
As the city has large investment in business enterprises from neighbouring Korea, there are thousands of Koreans now making their home here alongside the native Chinese, living in trust and harmony together. ![]() A natural result of having such a location Qingdao will host the Sailing Competition in the 2008 Olympic Games.
Attractions Main attractions beside the natural beauty are Mt. Laoshan, Taiqing Palace and Xlaoyushan.
The premier beach for swimming and sunbathing is Zhangiao. The sailing competition of the Beijing Olympics is sure to be a major attraction in 2008
What to eat Unless you are one of those unlucky people who can’t eat it Seafood is a must in Qingdao. Always popular with tourists the Qingdao seafood is fresh, light and delicious. If you are staying at the Shangri-La Hotel or Qingdao Hotel you will find it on the menu or visit the Yiqinglou Restaurant.
If you wish to visit on of the many barbecue restaurants during your stay here Meida'er Barbecue is a famous restaurant in Qingdao. As a chain it has many outlets, one of which is to be found at 125, Zhongshan Road, Qingdao. Another well know establishment is Wangjie Barbecue with two outlets on Zhongshan Road. They can be found at 30, Dexian Road and next to Chunhe Lou. Good places to assess the price and quality of barbecue food generally in the City. As home for the famous Qingdao (Tsingato) beer you can try it out at Yingde Beer House, near Yunxiao Road and behind the Shangri-La Hotel serving this specialty beer.
For those who wish to try Korean food then Stone House located at number 6, Taiwan Road, Shinan District, Qingdao has good service and serves colourful Korean cuisine. If you suddenly feel in need of a Western type meal during your stay then there are several places to go. A branch of KFC is located at number 53, Zhongshan Road, Qingdao or if its Pizza you want then Pizza Hut can be found in the Wanda Shopping Center, Taidong Yi Lu, Qingdao. For burgers head for McDonald’s (Jusco in Shinan District) located on floor 1, Jusco, Hong Kong Middle Road, Qingdao. Night entertainment
For those looking for some night-time entertainment then the Bar life is not to be missed. Located in the East part in the Downtown area and the Stone Old Man (Shi Lao Ren) Tourism Holiday area.
![]() A well known pub in Qingdao which you could try is the Honolulu Club on the first floor of the Huiquan Dynasty Hotel in Nanhai Road. You could also head for Yan’er Dao Road which is bustling with bars which now spill out onto First Zhangzhou Road and Minjiang Road. If you long for a glass of Home Brew Beer then you might find what you want in Beer Street which is in Dengzhou Road, Shibei District, North of the City. If you want to go on to a club then try out the Feeling Club, popular with young people and the largest in the area located at Building D, Hong Kong Garden Square, Hong Kong Middle Road. For those who enjoy the traditional Chinese Night Market you need to bear in mind that as with most night life the market here close earlier than in many other places at around 10.00 pm each night. Recommended are Taidong Pedestrian Street and Yan’an Er Lu Night Markets. Finally if you want to try out the cinema whilst in Qingdao then go to the Huiquan underground cinema close to the sea where you can also try out the Korean Barbeque restaurant Tudari and KFC. |
